The Greek vessel owner, Euroseas has signed a contract with the Korean shipyard, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., for the construction of two eco-design fuel-efficient, 2,800TEU container ships.
This is the first time that Euroseas has ordered new container vessels in its history.
The two new boxships are scheduled to be delivered during the first and second quarters of 2023, respectively. The total cost for these two newbuilding contracts is about US$76 million which will be financed with a combination of debt and equity, according to a company's statement.
"With this order, we continue our strategy to further grow the company in a manner that creates value for our shareholders and adheres to our environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitment of having a more environment-friendly fleet," commented Aristides Pittas, Chairman and CEO of Euroseas.
The new vessels will consume about 30% less fuel than the previous generation, non-eco ships, according to Pittas.
Euroseas has currently a fleet of 14 time chartered container ships with a total capacity of 42,281TEU.
